keeping my feet on the ground.

the shops are closed
parks are filled
with girls and boys throwing around frisbees
mothers walking dogs with each other
families biking

new york streets have never been this empty
except for the occasional homeless person and the people running with their dogs in central park
and the blaring sirens
the doctors getting sick but working all day and all night

migrants and immigrants, the people we don't accept and appreciate
still, work.
families bike and throw frisbees
mothers pick up coffee at Starbucks
minimum wage workers deliver us packages

we sit at home feeling lonely and sorry for ourselves
while nurses struggle with taking care of their children and working
they don't know where to keep their child during the day
they cant drop the child off at the grandparents; the grandparents are at risk
the daycare centers are closed

we sit here with the hard decision
which Netflix shows to binge today?
while grocery store workers put themselves in harm's way
just to feed us.

but.
if this is what we can do
to keep ourselves grounded
during this time
that's what we need to do.
the world is turned upside down
and if Gilmore Girls makes you smile,
if Gilmore Girls helps you to make it seem like you are right side up,
that's what you need to do.
